カウンターイルミネーション（Counterillumination）是指生物自體發光的防禦本能，生活在海洋中層的魚類，腹部通常具有發光器官，用來模糊自己從水底往上看的身影，以擾亂位於下方更深層的掠食者。
マリンスノー（Marine Snow），俗稱「海雪」，是指海水中浮游生物的殘骸與分泌物，形成無數的白色懸浮微粒，像下雪般緩緩向海底降沉的自然現象。
